Nashbar AL1 Sora Road Bike Review

Road bike, we have heard a lot about the best road bikes of 2020, the differences between a road bike and mountain bike, road bike and hybrid, and so on. Sometimes you just need a name to search for along the journey of buying a bike or even to research a new sport.

And get to know a good cheap road bike in the row will never be wrong for any beginner. Today, that affordable and great in usage bike I want to bring up is the Nashbar AL1 Sora Road Bike. With stable performance and an unexpectedly low price, this bike should be one of the great ones to mention in the review.

General Impression

First thing first, the price! If you are unsure about getting a really expensive gear and bike for your first few months of riding, you’ll be impressed with the $500 price from the Nashbar AL1 Sora Road Bike. It is notable for the ability to make a comfortable and easy-riding bike.

Another plus I want to add-on for this Nashbar AL1 is the modern but elegant look of the bike. They got the white frame that goes with the handlebars and the padding. Well, some people prefer a colorful bike or neon one for the reason of safety, but in this case, if you are biking in the daylight with this AL1, you might feel it just can’t be more elegant on the bike. The graphic on the frame is also subtle, but it helps to make the white color stand out. But, you know the cons of getting a white bike – you would have to clean it more often for the best look in a long time!

A disadvantage that the Nashbar AL1 Sora Road bike will include is the weight. It’s not a super light one, but it’s a great condition and acceptable weight for the road bike version. The wheels and tires might turn out with a lower cost material, but you can easily change with some other available one in the market.

Overall, with a price of $500, you wouldn’t have to complain about the reliability and the capacity of the bike. The aluminum frame, good and noble brake, the durable carbon forks, or the Shimano Sora 9 shifters are a good deal.

Weight Price and Size

It is 23 lbs in weight! It’s a low weight in the consideration of a road bike. You get a low weight one, you can speed up faster, and the ride is just comfortable after all. However, on the other hand, you’ll find it’s somehow too light to control (if you are a beginner). It will be a little too fast when you do the commuting trip of cruising around the nearby lake. But yes, it will bring you a great session of riding on the road.

If you see the original price of the Nashbar AL1, it is $1,000. The first value of the bike is $1,000. But after 3 years of releasing, among the whole many of the versions of bike available on the market, the price is discounted, and sometimes if you get lucky, you can check it out with the $399! I mean, if you are lucky! Otherwise, a good $500 is already a good choice overall.

This Nashbar AL1 Sora Bike is the only bike that includes the Shimano 105 gears system. You can get the bike in 3 sizes which are 48 – 50 and 53 cm. To be compared to other brands, the AL1 is not suitable for the tall, big guys.

Shifting System

The 9-speed shifting system of Shimano will not make you disappointed. And to some of the other bikes, the Shimano systems are always included in the mid-range price bike or over. It is famous for the durable and fast-changing shift between the speed.

The cassette gets 2 types – the 12 -34 teeth that you can choose from. If the other bikes usually get 34 teeth options, the pedaling should be easier. The 12-25 teeth one is designed to make the shift faster on flat terrain. But if you are planning for an uphill trip, you might have to think again. You might have to push more on the pedals to get the bike and yourself moving forward.

Frame and Fork

The aluminum frame of the AL1 is much lightẻ than the other version of the steel one. And, that’s the reason the bike is sold at a lower price. The simple tubing helps to reduce the weight in general. The manufacturer has put everything together so well that it still looks fine with a great shape for a road bike. The seat with the upfront-ride design also makes the bikers feel comfortable when riding especially on the long ride.

The carbon fork is another component that makes the bike reduce its weight. You can find the steerer in aluminum and the blade in carbon material in the AL1. Again, not a lot of cheap bikes get these “fancy” features for the decent ride.

Other Components

The saddle of the bike which comes from the Selle Royal is not my favorite thing on the bike. The cover looks a bit cheap and it’s easy to slip when you are riding too fast. Moreover, the longer you ride on the bike, the more you feel the pressure that you have to push over the saddle. That’s not what a rider would like to have in their bikes.

The wheels! It’s not a light version of wheels for a road bike. If the mountain bike needs big, heavy wheels, the road bike instead, needs a study but still a light set of wheels. The wheels include a 3-cross pattern and 32 spokes. It’s not an extra sturdy one, and the feel additional weight might affect your strength during the trips. However, for commuting purposes, the wheels can mostly do its job.

In conclusion, as I mentioned in the first few words, the bike is a good, cheap price for a beginner who likes using a road bike to ride around the city or to work. It has its disadvantages, but the price of $500 would be a great deal for anyone who wants to discover a new thing.

You might also find some other bikes in the brand such as the AL2 for your best comparison. In my opinion, though durability comes along with the price, you might always find some best option at a low price for your own experience.

Thank you and I hope you will enjoy reading my short review.
